Sonita Singwi
Artist Statement:
Folding transforms a two dimensional space into three dimensions. Folding is also an active part of our daily routines and how we move our bodies in space. On a micro level, protein folding is a process essential to life. The significance of the shape of the protein to its function underscores the significance of form and has influenced my works in paper, ceramic and painting.
My recent paintings on linen are predominantly comprised of shapes created from planes of light and dark which create the illusion of folds in space. The interplay of these planes with the textured three dimensional linen surface creates a tension between the fictional world of painting and the real world of objects. This duality is recognized in Indian philosophy as maya, or the idea that the physical world is an illusion.
