Nancy Manter
Artist Statement:
I am an abstract painter who lives between Beacon, New York and Bass Harbor, Maine. I am influenced by natural phenomena such as radically changing atmosphere, tides, and geological surfaces (both above and below the waterline). I have lived near polluted rivers and canals in Maine and more recently in Brooklyn and along the Hudson River in Beacon and Newburgh, New York. I have observed an alchemical effect in both waters and atmosphere, including air and water pollution, and the increase in severe weather patterns contribute to the acidic aspect as well as the spatial shifts in my current work. I use these images as metaphors for the human experience in a precarious world. My paintings are Flashe paint on beveled wooden panels or on Yupo, a synthetic paper. I use Flashe paint for its densely matte surface qualities, and yet when diluted and layered, it becomes textured and luminous.
