Vera Vasek

Artist Statement:

Since a young age, I have been fascinated with the flow and interaction of things: The discovery of a fossil of a leaf in a childhood stream, watching molten bronze poured into a plaster investment mold, experiencing calm ocean tides dispersing particulates of thousands of years old minerals and marine organisms, into rhythmic markings on a sandy beach. As a sculptor, I engage with the natural and physical world around me, searching for meaning in this culturally disorienting place in time. My current work combines the sensuous markings of tidal flows with industrial materials: Manipulations of concrete and silicone rubber, epoxy and urethane resins. Sometimes, incompatible materials and methods are pushed to the breaking point.

Artist Biography:

Vera Vasek was born in Buffalo, NY and raised in the suburbs of Cleveland, OH.

Family obligations brought her to Louisiana, where she was awarded a BFA at LSU in Baton Rouge. Her chosen studies concentrated on classical realism and traditional sculpture techniques.

In 1984 she was accepted into the Johnson Atelier apprenticeship program in Mercerville, NJ where she cast in bronze a life size female figure that she began modeling at LSU. This bronze was accepted into the National Academy of Design’s 1986 exhibition. During this time, she worked as a mold maker in Hoboken, NJ and New York City, as well as bartending to pay the bills.

Over the next few decades, she continued with her artmaking in the Florida Keys, documenting tidal flows and her natural surroundings, through photography and video, while creating plaster work, she calls, “Tidal Reliefs”.

Vera currently maintains a studio in Dallas, Texas.
