Alex Paik
Artist Statement:
My site-responsive, modular wall installations explore the transformative potential of repetition through folded, hand-painted paper units arranged in temporary configurations. Each piece adapts to its environment—reconfiguring to fit different spaces and forming new relationships as units interact with each other through form and color. There is no fixed final image; instead, each work offers nearly infinite compositional possibilities.
The geometric structures I create serve as frameworks for relationships, where individual elements combine to form complex, emergent patterns. This approach weaves together influences from my diverse background in martial arts, Western classical music, community building, and explorations of racial identity. As adrienne maree brown describes in her concept of emergent strategy, I’m interested in “the way complex systems and patterns arise out of a multiplicity of relatively simple interactions.”
My work embodies the inherent adaptability of structures and our endless capacity to imagine new relationships—not just visually within the artwork, but as a metaphor for how we might rebuild connections within ourselves and the world we share.
